Carl von Imhoff, a Württemberg veteran of the Seven Years' War and a well-known miniature painter, embarked from Plymouth to Kolkâtâ in Bengal in 1769 in the service of the East India Company. On the ship's passage, he loses his wife to Warren Hastings, India's future colonial monster. Imhoff takes it fatalistically and moves to the Weimar court of the muses. But India never lets go of his ex-wife, son and grandson. The story of the German baron Carl von Imhoff, Marian de Saint Valentin and Warren Hastings has made a few rounds in literature, for example with Macaulay, Feuchtwanger and Brecht. Which modern divorce story offers more?
