Baur (1792-1860) was the first to introduce the historical-critical method, which Niebuhr and Ranke had applied to history in general, to church history. In doing so, he became 'the true author of historical critical theology' (Hirsch), 'the pioneer of scientific research on the history of Christianity' (Troeltsch).
