The morphology of the equine brain in magnetic resonance tomography is becoming increasingly important due to the constantly improving diagnostic possibilities of intracranial, neurological diseases in horses. Despite numerous descriptions of the structure of the equine brain in anatomical studies, only few descriptions of the MRI anatomy of the horse brain exist. These are largely based on MRI sequences with reduced quality or MRI images of foals. The aim of this work was a detailed description of the morphology of the equine brain structures post mortem using 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging. Sagittal, dorsal and transversal T2-weighted MRI sequences with a resolution of 0.25 mm were used to clearly localize and name the individual brain structures. The MRI sequences were compared and correlated with the corresponding transversal histology sections in order to identify the separate brain areas with high precision. Furthermore, for better orientation, virtual 3D models of the equine brain were gained using the MRI datasets. The present work makes a contribution to the image interpretation of MRI images of the equine brain and can serve as a foundation for the future planning of in vivo MRI examinations in horses.
